I don't think you ever answered (or possibly received) my Tenderloin question from a couple weeks ago... Sad.
Sorry, think I missed it, or it slipped my mind. Tips for survival: Ignore the people asking if you want to buy methadone. Ignore the people yelling, “Hey, whiteboy!” (assuming you are a whiteboy) Know where you are going, pay attention to your surroundings, and don’t make friendly with crazy people. But I’ve very rarely felt threatened in the Tenderloin.
Good, cheap places to eat: Turtle Tower. Pho 2000. Tu Lan. Pretty much any bahn mi spot. Kim Thanh has decent Chinese. Mid-City Foods is okay for Mexican. Shalimar is delicious, but destroys my stomach, for Indian. Taco’s Sandwiches on 6th is pretty good and they are about to open a Pearl’s Burgers on 6th and Market, and that place is bomb. Hyde Away Blues BBQ is alright. Brenda’s for breakfast. Farmer Brown. Olivo’s for pupusas!
